Back in the saddle

Just finished my first new post-contest story. One a day for almost two months and now this is an accomplishment; funny. Goes to show that streaks, competition, are about the most powerful things ever. Feels good to finish something, though. I missed it.

Submission #3 and rejection #1

I think the Clarkesworld rejection has already spoiled me; all the other markets are estimated at a month or more before they get back to you. I’m waiting to hear from Theresa before I send Twenty Ten out again. Since turnaround times from here on out are so long I’ve got to be strategic. The [...]

Submission #2

Just keeping ya’ll up to date. This one went to McSweeney’s, which is somehow even less likely to go through than the one to Clarkesworld. But I don’t care. The piece is perfect for them, and it’s good enough. And when it gets rejected, I’ll send it to someone else. Did I mention 2010 was [...]

Twenty Ten

This morning, for what is essentially the first time ever, I submitted a story. To Clarkesworld magazine, which has published some pretty compelling work in the past. Spar, by Kij Johnson, I liked particularly. [Mom: don't read it.] The rejection rate is crazy high, and even though I feel my story is very strong it [...]

Jerks and women

Clay Shirkey wrote a blog post that people are talking about. Succinctly, it’s about how men are generally more assertive, self-promoting, and annoying than women are, and how that disparity might put women at a disadvantage. It’s tempting to imagine that women could be forceful and self-confident without being arrogant or jerky, but that’s a [...]

Shitty writing on Slashdot

Sometimes I like to save either super good or super bad writing examples. Here’s one of the latter, which I have ripped off in its entirety: theodp writes “To power the Tools for America’s Job Seekers Challenge, the US Department of Labor tapped IdeaScale, a subsidiary of Survey Analytics, which is headquartered in Seattle with [...]

The Gunslinger

The results are in, and I won the second-annual post-Clarion-West 2008 writing contest. The top three people were: 1: Me (70 stories) 2: Maggie (45 stories) 3: Pam (42 stories) I turned in #70 just before midnight, New Year’s Eve, and haven’t written anything since then, which has been weird, but not as weird as [...]

Year end

The year’s about to end. I’ve been super lax in updating stories recently, which is funny, that the posting of the stories, which takes three minutes, is what I’ve been bad at, and not the writing of the fucking things, which takes an hour or more but takes a shitload of mental energy besides, during [...]

Story #22: Ice (and others)

I’m sick of writing a blank post with a few gibberish characters on it every day. From now on I’ll just update the CCW0809 page without further annotation here; if you want to comment on a story just mention in your comment which story you’re referring to. Oh yeah, one other thing, a story of [...]

Story #21: Fucking Well Getting To The Bottom Of It
