Yeah, it is sad. I've had a soft spot for McCain in my heart for years so watching all this makes me a lot more pissed off than if I'd always thought he was a run-of-the-mill GOPer.

Re: going beyond anti-intellectualism etc. I like this quote by David Frum from the National Review on the conservative base in this election:

"There's a photograph circulating on conservative blogs that shows Palin lounging on a motorcycle, paired with another of Obama in a helmet on a bicycle. It's headed: "All you need to know." Personally I need to know a little more. That's not even insufficient information. It's anti-information — a denial that information matters.

You can enjoy a motorcycle and be pro-choice. Or antiwar. Or in favor of immigration amnesty. Or for that matter, in favor state control of the means of production!"

Regardles of what anyone thinks about unions and their future - there is one candidate more favorable to unions than the other so it seems pretty logical that unions and their members might be inclined to vote for "that one."

The level of ignorance in the crowds at this late date is shocking. 20 months Obama has been campaigning, and they still think he's an Arab or a secret Muslim terrorist or whatever. That goes beyond anti-intellectualism to anti-realityism or anti-truthism, or something like that.

At least it seems like for a moment he realizes what a bad idea it was to start pandering to the racists and xenophobes. If there is a decent guy still in there somewhere, that means there's a part of him that's hating every minute of his own campaign. And that kind of makes me feel sorry for him, actually.
